KORE Fill Cavity Wall Insulation Receives Updated NSAI Agrément Certificate

by Brian Flax | Aug 06, 2020

KORE is pleased to announce an update to our NSAI Agrément certificate for KORE Fill Bonded Bead Cavity Wall Insulation. There are a number of key changes to Cert No. 07/0293 which will be addressed in more detail below. The updated certificate can be downloaded directly from the KORE Resource Centre, or by clicking on button at the bottom of this page.

Full Compliance with Part L 2019

KORE Fill Bonded Bead Cavity Wall Insulation is now certified in cavities of up to 225mm in width. Wider cavities over 225mm can be pumped subject to specific project specification and certification by an architect/engineer. For new build, this makes compliance with nZEB and Part L 2019 easy. An example of the achievable U-values are displayed below:

Updated Guidance on Wall Ties

KORE have worked with the NSAI to get clarification on wall ties for cavities over 150mm. Up until now there has been no guidance for the industry for wider cavities with a statement that wall ties for cavities over 150mm needed an engineers design. There is now a clear statement and certification from NSAI for wall types, size and spacings in conjunction with KORE Fill. There is absolutely no requirement for expensive wall ties.

The U-values in the tables above include allowances for stainless steel wall ties (with a thermal conductivity of 0.17W/mK) of 3.3mm Ø @ 2.5 per m2 for cavity’s up to 75mm wide; 3.3mm Ø @ 3 per m2 for cavity’s 76-100mm wide; 3.3mm Ø @ 4.9 per m2 for cavity’s 101-150mm wide and 5.5mm Ø @ 2.5 per m2 for cavity’s 151-225mm wide. All wall ties fully penetrate the insulation layer.

Allowable Mortar Joints (New Build)

KORE Fill can now offer alternative mortar joints in brick other than flush joint. The updated certificate includes new allowable mortar joints for new build 1-4 (with 1 being the most preferred). The image to the right shows brick mortar joint profiles (new build only) in order of acceptability. These include:

  1. Bucket handle mortar joint (compressed)
  2. Weather struck mortar joint (compressed)
  3. Recessed joint, maximum of 4.0mm depth (compressed)
  4. Flush joint (not compressed)

For more information on the types of acceptable mortar joints please contact our technical department.

Updated Allowable Wall Heights

In normal exposure areas, the types of outer leaf masonry finishes where KORE Fill Cavity Wall Insulation is suitable are as follows:

  • Impervious cladding and rendered walls with a minimum cavity width of 40mm and up to 12m in height.
  • Fair faced unrendered brickwork with tooled and compressed mortar joints on two story buildings, or two story with room in roof buildings, up to maximum of 8m with a minimum cavity width of 40mm

Walls must be in a good state of repair with no evidence of frost damage. Mortar joints must not show evidence of damage which would cause water ingress. Unsuitable brickwork mortar joints may be remedied by re-pointing.

Key Extracts From the Updated Certificate

  • The thermal conductivity remains unchanged for KORE Fill Original (0.035W/mK) and KORE Fill Diamond (0.033W/mK)
  • A new building is classified as less than 3 years’ old
  • An existing building is classified as 3 years or older
  • Partial fill on existing buildings include EPS, foil-faced PIR, PUR or PF board. KORE Fill can be added to the cavity. as long as the remaining cavity width is at least 40mm for KORE Fill Original or 50mm for KORE Fill Diamond. Mineral wool boards require at least 50mm of remaining cavity.
  • The maximum height for a rendered cavity wall for use with KORE Fill is 12m. For brick outer leaf, KORE Fill can be used for up to 2 stories or up to 8m with a room in roof.
  • The exposure zone is only applicable to new buildings when it comes to a brick outer leaf. If the building is existing (3 years or older) then the exposure zones are not applicable. Consideration must be given to the location of the building and the cavity inspected via boroscope to ensure it is functioning correctly and not suffering moisture issues.
  • The drilling patterns now also represent brick leaf up to 8m in height and with room in roof
