The Energy Efficiency Problem

Many homes in Ireland and the United Kingdom lack proper insulation, making them highly energy inefficient by today’s standards. This creates an uncomfortable indoor environment for its occupants and wastes energy spent on heating and cooling. Quality issues with planning, design and construction can also contribute towards this energy efficiency problem. An inefficient home may have problems with condensation, damp, mould and mildew, draughty rooms, structural issues, rot, improper ventilation and high energy bills.

Luckily with the proper design and planning, engineering and high quality construction most of these issues can now be avoided.

The Solution

This detached timber frame house features high levels of insulation in the floors, walls and attic utilising a combination of EPS, cellulose and wool insulation. KORE’s Insulated Foundation System was utilised to insulate the foundation of the house and to eliminate thermal bridging at the wall to floor junction. A floor U-value of 0.07W/m2K was achieved with 400mm of KORE HD White EPS100.

700mm of cellulose insulation was used in the attic space to achieve a U-value of 0.06W/m2K, in addition, an Intello Plus airtight membrane was used to achieve high levels of air tightness.

The house was built with a timber frame wall construction. The wall construction features: 60mm GUTEX Thermowall, 12.5mm Spano Durelis Populair, 220mm timber frame structure with 0.034 lamda wool full fill insulation, Pro-Clima Intello Plus Airtight System, 100mm service zone (double 50mm batten) with wool full fill insulation and 12.5mm plasterboard.

All windows are air tight, triple glazed and argon filled in Aluclad frames. The windows have an average U-value of 0.8W/m2K or less. The cills to all window openings are formed as a part of the system to reduce heat loss.

Insulation U-Values Achieved

KORE Insulated Foundation System (400mm HD White EPS100) 0.21W/m²K  0.07W/m²K
700mm Cellulose Insulation (Attic)  0.16W/m²K  0.06W/m²K

KORE Solutions

This project made use of the following KORE EPS product.

A well insulated house should always start with the foundation. KORE’s Insulated Foundation System was able to help Tullaghanstown Construction and Doherty Timber Frame achieve a floor insulation U-value of 0.07W/m2K while eliminating the thermal bridges in the wall to floor junction. All around high levels of insulation and air tightness in the walls and roof, coupled with high quality engineering, planning and construction have contributed to super energy efficient and healthy homes.

The homeowners will enjoy a consistent indoor temperature and environment regardless of the season, low annual running costs for heating and cooling and an overall healthy home with high indoor air quality. Carbon emissions from these homes will also be greatly reduced.
