5 Reasons Why You Should Choose Cavity Wall Insulation

Upgrading the insulation in your home can be a big investment. Maybe you’ve already tried some of the simpler and cost effective methods, such as draught proofing and pipe insulation, but you still find yourself in a cold home day after day. You run the boiler for hours on end but can’t seem to retain the heat to keep you and your family warm.

It’s not a secret that many homes built in Ireland lack sufficient insulation. In fact, homes built before 2006 may contain little to no insulation in the attic or walls at all.

When you’ve made the decision it’s time to upgrade your insulation the hard part begins – choosing the system to install in your home. In Ireland you’ve many to choose from, including external wall insulation, cavity wall insulation, internal wall dry lining and spray foam insulation. The number of choices can be time consuming and overwhelming.

We’ve put together a list that can help make your decision a bit easier. You’ll soon be on the way to a warm home and lower energy bills.

Here’s 5 reasons to choose the KORE Fill Bonded Bead Cavity Wall Insulation System.

1. KORE Fill is only installed by certified and approved contractors

Insulation should only be installed by expert contractors. While it may be tempting to save money by hiring someone who holds no qualifications, incorrectly installed insulation can cause damage to your home and your health. Problems include damage to the structure of the home from surface and interstitial condensation, mould growth, rot and insufficient ventilation. Hiring an unqualified contractor simply isn’t worth the risk to your home or its occupants.

KORE ensures all works are carried out by certified and approved contractors when you choose the KORE Fill system. Our contractors are SEAI registered, NSAI approved and fully trained to install KORE Fill cavity wall insulation in your home. Our contractors are subject to regular audits, quality assurance and health and safety checks. You can be sure you’re dealing with an approved contractor simply by referencing our Official KORE Fill Installers Register or contacting us directly before works begin.

2. EPS cavity wall insulation lasts the lifetime of your home

KORE Fill is made from expanded polystyrene, or EPS. This material is water resistant, rot-proof and doesn’t degrade over time. You can be assured that EPS cavity wall insulation will last the life of the building, meaning once it’s insulated you won’t have to worry about it again. The average payback period is only three to five years, so you’ll see a return on your investment in a short period of time.

In addition, EPS is sustainable. It can be recycled once the useful life of the building has been reached. Left over material can be reused as insulation or recycled into a variety of other EPS products.

Cavity wall insulation can be used in both new builds and existing buildings, and is the perfect choice if you’re building a new home with cavity walls. The U-value is only limited by the width of the cavity, meaning the wider the cavity the lower the U-values can be achieved.

3. KORE Fill ensures a complete fill every time

Just as the title says, you can be assured that the cavity walls in your home are completely filled with KORE Fill Bonded Bead. The contractor will use a borescope before the works begin to inspect the inside of the cavity. They’ll look at the condition of the cavity to ensure the home is suitable for cavity wall insulation.

Small holes are drilled into the exterior walls of the home in a certified and approved pattern. The drill pattern may vary slightly depending on the type of home. This pattern and system ensures that the cavity is completely filled with insulation.

4. Installation of cavity wall insulation is quick and painless

Unlike internal wall dry lining, cavity wall insulation is pumped into the cavity from the outside of the home and, on average, takes less than one day to install. All holes that are drilled into the exterior walls are filled and coloured to match the home’s existing appearance. You won’t notice any difference in the appearance of your home after the works are complete. There is no on-site storage of materials required, and all machinery and left over material is disposed of by the contractor at the end of the day.

The installation time depends on the size of the home and the width of the cavity. Most homes can be pumped in just a few hours. It’s advisable to have attic insulation installed or topped up to at least 300mm for maximum benefit and heat retention. The contractor may also install roof and wall ventilation depending on the requirements of the home. All works will be discussed with you during the initial site survey.

5. Your home will cost less money to heat

The main benefit of cavity wall insulation is a warmer home that takes less time to heat, retains heat for longer periods of time and requires less energy to reach the desired indoor temperature. This means you’ll save money on your heating bills every year going forward. In addition, your home should feel warmer the day the insulation is installed. You may even notice a difference without running the heat at all!

Cavity wall insulation also works in the summer. Your house should be considerably cooler on hot days, meaning a comfortable indoor temperature all year round. More importantly, you’ll be reducing your carbon footprint and impact on the environment just by installing insulation.

White cavity wall insulation may not be a suitable choice for every home in Ireland, it is a cost effective solution for buildings that meet KORE Fill’s requirements. There are insulation grants available to help reduce the cost, and even free insulation schemes for homeowners that meet certain requirements.
