EPS: An Environmentally Sustainable Material

We have proven our commitment to the environment time and time again; whether it’s supporting nationwide strategies, or local and community projects aimed at reducing our energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Environmental Product Declaration
KORE offers an Environmental Product Declaration, certified with the Irish Green Building Council and EPD Ireland, that encompasses a number of our EPS solutions, including EPS70 Silver & White, EPS100 Silver & White, EPS150 White, EPS200 and EPS300. Our third-party accredited EPD can be viewed and downloaded below, or by logging into the KORE Resource Centre.
The Manufacturing Process
KORE uses state of the art equipment to manufacture Expanded Polystyrene at our 45,000 sq/ft facility in Kilnaleck, Co. Cavan. Our manufacturing process is completely sustainable – we even use recycled material in select insulation products, like KORE External Wall Insulation. KORE EPS is manufactured in a three step process.
Pre-Expansion of Raw Material
We use steam to expand the hydrocarbon found in our raw material. As the material reaches its boiling point, it expands 40 to 50 times its original volume. Pre-expansion of EPS produces no toxic chemicals, CFCs or HCFCs.
Manufacturing of Expanded Material
Once the raw material has expanded it goes through a maturing process. This ensures that the material reaches a balanced temperature and pressure.
Moulding Process for the Final Product
Once the Expanded Polystyrene beads have matured, the material is moulded using steam and heat. EPS is usually moulded into large blocks that can be cut to the desired length and shape. In addition, moulds can be used for custom projects and packaging depending on the needs of the client. The finish product can be used as insulation in construction applications, used in a variety of civil engineering applications and other items like product packaging. High quality is ensured throughout the process.
Sustainability of EPS
Expanded Polystyrene is a sustainable material. The embodied energy of EPS is recovered many times over when the material is used as insulation. Expanded Polystyrene can be used in a variety of insulation applications, including:
- Bonded Bead Cavity Wall Insulation
- External Wall Insulation
- Floor Insulation
- Foundation Insulation
- Roof Insulation
- Attic Insulation
Expanded Polystyrene will last the full lifetime of the building. If you open an external wall where cavity wall insulation was installed, it should look and perform the same even decades later. As EPS does not degrade, it’s performance is not affected by time. It is also moisture resistant and rot-proof, so even in harsh conditions the material will perform as expected.
Most other forms of insulation will degrade over time. The time it takes to degrade may increase if the insulation is disturbed or exposed to the elements. Some materials used as insulation have been known to settle over time, leaving gaps in the building envelope, leading to problems like thermal looping or cold bridging.
Insulation that has lost its effectiveness may need to be replaced more often, creating unnecessary waste, decreasing the energy efficiency of the building, and ultimately costing the building owner more money to maintain. EPS on the other hand is maintenance free for the life of the building. If EPS needs to be removed from a building at any point, the material can be recycled and reused in a wide variety of products and applications.
The BRE Green Guide to Specification gives Expanded Polystyrene an A+ summary rating when used as insulation in domestic buildings.
