The Energy Efficiency Problem

Glavloc, with the aid of architects, engineers and construction industry experts will design your ideal “A” rated home in a fraction of the time when compared to a traditional build.

Glavloc uses KORE EPS for several applications, including the foundation system, internal and external wall insulation and roof insulation. In addition, they use solar panels, a heat pump and heat recovery ventilation (all dependent on client preference) to ensure an A rating.
Beginning from the ground up, Glavloc used KORE’s EPS for the insulated foundation system to eliminate thermal (cold) bridging, eliminate blockwork, and to reduce site excavation and work. A floor U-value of 0.12W/m2K was achieved with the use of the insulated foundation system (EPS100 & EPS300). Current building regulations in Ireland require a U-value at or below 0.15W/m2K when installed with an underfloor heating system. The insulated foundation system surpassed the building regulations for this property and was one aspect that conformed to this house gaining an A2 rating.
KORE EPS for external insulation was used in conjunction with the insulated foundation system to ensure that thermal bridging at the wall to floor junction was eliminated. A wall U-value of 0.14W/m2K was achieved using external insulation and internal dry lining, while current building regulations in Ireland require a U-value at or below 0.21W/m2K. Internally, the house was insulated with 90mm of EPS70, while the external insulation system was comprised of 125mm of EPS70.
KORE EPS was also used as roof insulation, 75mm of EPS200 achieved a U-value of 0.12W/m2K, while current building regulations in Ireland require a U-value at or below 0.16W/m2K.
High performance EPS insulation solutions were used in conjunction with a Nilan heat pump and heat recovery ventilation system. Solar panels were also used towards achieving the A2 BER rating. The house also achieved a zero thermal bridge rating at all common junctions.
Reducing Build Times
There is no denying that Ireland is in the midst of a housing shortage. Most analysts believe that Ireland requires 30,000 to 35,000 dwellings per year in the medium term to satisfy the housing needs of an increasing population. Some put this number even higher at closer to 42,000. In any case, Ireland requires a housing strategy that sees high quality dwellings built in a shore amount of time.
Glavloc’s Rapid Build System streamlines the process with it’s three main objectives:
- Ensuring a quality build for every project
- Ensuring efficiency in construction
- Focusing on lean processes
The main components of a Glavloc home are manufactured off-site, delivered, unloaded and assembled by hand. This includes 9 CNC (Computer Numerical Control Machining) components and 12 Expanded Polystyrene components. By manufacturing the building components off-site, build times are reduced by as much as 80 percent. In addition, Glavloc dwellings meet many of the low energy certifications, like nZEB and Passive House.
Quality is maintained through certification by Engineers Ireland, the Institute of Structural Engineers and BBA certification for its thermal components. In addition, each Glavloc build is independently certified. Glavloc utilise a preferred network of fully trained contractors located across the country.
Most builds take between four and eight weeks, while extensions on existing builds can be completed in as little as two weeks. Glavloc offers a range of pre-designed homes while also providing the option to submit your own plans. Buildings can be customised to suit the needs of the client, including renewable energy systems (i.e. heat pumps, mechanical ventilation, solar panels for PV and solar thermal generation).
